genetic height

Genetic height testing is a way to predict or estimate an individual’s height by analyzing their genetic information. The test focuses on detecting genetic variations related to height to project how tall a person may be in adulthood. Human height is not only influenced by genetic factors, but is also closely related to environmental factors (e.g., nutrition, exercise, etc.). Genetic height testing can usually provide a predictive value of height based on genetic information.

Common methods of genetic height testing include.

  • Gene chip technology: By analyzing a large number of height-related genetic markers (e.g., SNPs single nucleotide polymorphisms), from which genetic variants related to height can be found.
  • Genome Sequencing: By sequencing an individual’s genome, genes that may affect height are identified. This test usually does not provide a very accurate prediction because height is also affected by many other factors such as hormone levels, health conditions and dietary habits. However, it can provide some prediction of height on a genetic basis and provide some insight into how genes affect height for the individual or parents.
